How to choose a suitable ball mill for mineral processing

Confused about ball mill selection? Learn key factors to choose lattice ball mill or overflow ball mill according to capacity, material, grinding fineness and wet/dry process.

Ball mill is core grinding equipment in mineral processing, sand making and metallurgical plants. Improper model selection will lead to insufficient output, uneven particle size and high operating cost. This guide helps you pick out a suitable ball mill step by step.

1. Confirm Basic Working Conditions
Before model selection, you need to clarify 6 core parameters:
Raw material type (iron ore, gold ore, quartz stone, limestone etc.)
Material hardness determines the wear resistance standard of liners and steel balls. Hard rocks require high-chromium wear parts.
Production capacity (tons per hour)
Capacity directly decides the cylinder diameter and length of the ball mill. Larger cylinder brings higher throughput.
Maximum feeding size
Normal feeding size ≤25 mm. Oversized raw materials need primary crushing by jaw crusher or cone crusher.
Required discharging fineness (mesh)
Finer finished material needs longer grinding time, which affects equipment configuration.
Wet grinding or dry grinding
Wet grinding: widely used in mineral separation plant. Higher efficiency, matched with spiral classifier or hydrocyclone.
Dry grinding: for quartz sand, slag and materials that cannot contact water, equipped with dust removal system.
Open circuit or closed circuit grinding
Open circuit: materials are ground once and discharged directly, low investment, uneven fineness.
Closed circuit: coarse particles return to regrind via classifier. Stable particle size, preferred for large concentrators.

2. Choose Lattice Ball Mill or Overflow Ball Mill
The two most popular types have clear application boundaries.

Lattice Ball Mill

MQG01 Lattice Ball Mill

Lattice Ball Mill

Our star product Lattice Ball Mill installs a lattice plate at the discharge end to force material discharging.
Advantages: Fast discharging speed, large hourly capacity, avoid over-grinding.
Recommended application: Primary coarse grinding in mineral processing production line.

Overflow Ball Mill

MQY01 Overflow Ball Mill

MQY02 Overflow Ball Mill

Without lattice plate, materials flow out relying on liquid level.
Advantages: Finer discharging particle size.
Disadvantages: Easy over-grinding, lower throughput under the same specification.
Recommended application: Secondary fine grinding.
Common flow: Lattice ball mill for coarse grinding + Overflow ball mill for fine grinding.
3. Match Supporting Components
Liners: High manganese steel for general ores; high chromium alloy liner for high-hardness minerals.
Grinding steel balls: Large balls for coarse grinding, small graded balls for fine grinding.
Driving system: Ordinary reducer drive for small & medium models; central drive for large ball mills for stable operation.
4. Avoid Common Selection Mistakes
❌ Only focus on capacity while ignoring discharging fineness
❌ Feed oversized rock without front crushing equipment
❌ Mix wet ball mill with dry grinding working condition
❌ Select overflow ball mill for primary coarse grinding, resulting in blockage and low output
